Sewing with the girls and Arwen's Doll

I know I have said it before but I am a keen believer in our children being involved in our lives on a daily basis and thus being influenced by our own creativity.

Some time ago , in fact way back in January I was making this little pocket dolly for Arwen for her Birthday. I originally saw it on Ginny's Blog and knew I just had to make it for our precious little girl. I love making toys for our children and this looked easy too.

As I have noticed as soon as I started to get my materials ready Myffwyn asked if she "could sew with you Mummy?"  How could I resist!

So once again I reverted to my standby favourite of embroidery on a hoop. I have in the past when the girls were younger  used a piece of felt and just let them stitch up and down, but this time Myffwyn wanted a pattern to copy.

She has seen me and the older girls prepare these for gifts for each other. I LOVE embroidery on calico and our older girls have completed some beautiful pieces in the past. They also make great Christmas Presents for girls (or crafty boys) to make.

You do know Christmas is coming fast, right? Just saying because we have children making gifts already.

I drew a fairly plain flower for her to do a back-stitich embroidery on. Back-stitch is a fairly simple stitch but does take a little while to master like this I think.

We sat down together for a while and sewed together, Myffy her embroidery and I sewed the pocket doll. After a while Myffy had done all she wanted and left for the rest of the day. I think she really wanted to just have some Mummy time and do the same as Mummy.

You just knew this was coming didn't you? As I have said creativity encourages others to start creative pursuits. Once Myffwyn started her embroidery Moran wanted one too. So we set her up in the evening and she and Myffwyn sat and sewed while watching a DVD before dinner.

Just to keep things in perspective, the girls never did finish their sewing, but it is ready for each time they think about it and want to do a little hand sewing or join in with the other crafting people at the moment. So they do keep coming back to it time and time again.

I did finish my little dolly for Arwen and I really like the size of it because it just fits into a  pocket on her little dresses and jeans.

And for me I am encouraged to have our children enjoying the creative process in a productive and companionable way.
