Remember That Kitchen? ....

... that I have been coveting... for my next house?

.. well I stumbled upon the whole house over at House Beautiful.

It's in San Francisco.

Check out the gold leaf accents.

They sort of got everything perfect....

...with Ralph Lauren furniture... and Mr Adler's cushions.

A black and white base with neutral textured accents.

Give. me. that. sofa.

A beautiful mix of old and modern.

How's that for a bathroom pendant light? ... a crystal ship chandelier!
Tiles are of course Ann Sacks, as are the splashback tiles in the kitchen.

Does it get any better than this?
Oh Northern Hemisphere, I do love thee and all you have to offer architecturally.

What's your favourite room? Mine's still the kitchen. I am so having a black island bench next time.

Happy Tuesday!

Mr Bakes' Beautiful Kitchen

The kitchen in the Hampton Designer Showhouse, in Southampton, NY, took my breath away.

As soon as I arrived in the kitchen and started hyperventilating, Mary...the chief administrator of the whole house (from planning the whole thing, to co-ordinating the designers, to the day to day management of the whole spectacular)... said Mr Bakes, the kitchen designer, was in town so she'd give him a call. Before I could take my next melodramatic breath, he arrived and answered my 4 hundred questions about his beautiful space.

The entire kitchen, from design to implementation, was created by Mr Bakes' company... 'Bakes and Company'. All the cabinetry was custom, hand-painted maple. See why I couldn't breathe? It featured solid walnut drawer fronts and curved walnut veneered side panels on the island benches.

The sink was custom brushed nickel.

The tapware was from France, from Margot
Heartstopping.
The island benchtops were Carrera Marble, 'joya' polished.

All the nickel cabinetry hardware was custom made by Mr Bakes. Yep, 'Bakes and Company' custom polished nickel handles and knobs. It gets better....Mr Bakes' company also created all the accessories!.... and all the beautiful copper cookware, which is manufactured locally on Long Island, under the brand 'Bakes by Design'. My post travel depression gets worse when I discuss such matters... custom design, local manufacturing, exquisite workmanship. Sigh.

The wooden bench-tops were a natural oiled walnut, oiled using a food safe organic oil, allowing for the counter to be used as a food preparation area... and also allowing for ease of repair. Marks and scratches can be lightly sanded and spot refinished with oil, no need to re-sand the complete surface. Genius.

Digressing... I have to say that, if this was my beloved kitchen, there is no way I would be using these masterpiece bench-tops for any food prep at all. I'd use the other thousand metres of marble benchspace to chop my zucchinis.

Anyway, the walnut counters should be re-oiled once a month or so for maintenance.

The splashback was designed by Mr Bakes himself and custom made for him by 'New Ravenna' (of course!) It's natural stone, chosen from a colour palette to resonate with the kitchen. Mr Bakes' concept drawing was converted by computer to cut stone mosaic pieces, laid out in the factory in one mat and then supplied to the project in approximately 16 sheets for fixing.

Solid walnut drawer fronts.
I could cry.

The range area counter tops were Quartzite, a slightly harder surface than marble..... and ideal for either side of the range.

Spectacular.

Hand painted maple.
Look at the finish! Perfection.

Mr Bakes asked what we used for our kitchen finishes in Australia. I told him how popular 2 pak is. He asked what 2 pak was and when I told him about the whole polyeurythane thing and the spray on situation, I could see him shudder slightly. He was such a gentleman, he didn't have to use any words to express his slight disbelief.

"Life is so different back here", she said in her haze of post travel depression.

I picked the lights were from Circa Lighting, even before I stepped foot in the kitchen.
I know my lights.
Sigh.

Appliances were by Dacor.

The floors were plain sliced White Oak with Jacobean stain.

The kindly Mr Bakes.
I chatted with Mr Bakes about the whole pricing of a kitchen setup like this one. Let's just put it this way, if this kitchen was created here in Australia, it would be at least double the price that it cost over yonder... and that includes the appliances. :(

The kitchen opened out into another delightful sitting room, furnished by 'Old Town Crossing'.

Looking back, you can see how this room then flowed back into 'The Den', by 'Kate Singer Home', that I featured here on Monday.

I loved this kitchen. It was edgy, with contemporary accents on a traditional base. Years ahead of trend.
What do you think? Could you see yourself washing up your good glasses in that gorgeous sink? I can!

On The Subject Of Refrigerators

It's funny how your mind jumps all over the place when you're scheming a house.... from the roofline and eaves... to the front path stone and pool orientation. To pool house or not? Wainscoting panels or vj's? Wallpaper in the bedrooms? All the big questions.  Last night, it was kitchens... well fridges... to be exact. I was searching for a picture, of something so unrelated to kitchens, for a client and got distracted by fridges. It's delicious... to have distractions again.... distractions that just aren't important... if you know what I mean.

So my thoughts last night were (specifically) all over glass-doored fridges. Important, because if I could ever have one in my kitchen, I wouldn't be sticking it in the pantry, like last time. It would be a feature.... so I would have to design the kitchen around it.

Oooh, now there's a thought... 'a scissor truss kitchen'! Hmmm.
I digress.

The limitation of course .... is cost.... and the Australian distribution is rather limited.... unless you go commercial. I think there is only one 'half-glassed-doored' domestic option out there with the Sub Zero tag on it. Please correct me if I am totally wrong. That would be nice. Has anyone sourced a commercial glass- doored fridge for their kitchen? Is it really a 'domestic glass-doored fridge wasteland' out here in Australia?

Oooooh, I love them. What do you think? Love 'em or hate 'em? Wine or food? You'd have to keep things a bit tidy!

Happy Thursday! We are savouring the last few 'snippets' of school holidays before we get back into it all next week. My boys are at the stage of wanting to just relax at home now... and do nothing but play with the lizards, zombie out on computer games (before they are banned for the term... mean mother) and run in packs with the neighbourhood kids..... skateboards, bikes, nerf guns... you know the drum. #boys

Up In LIghts

Check out Letitia's beautiful kitchen! I love the hutch/cabinet. I am a sucker for free standing furniture in kitchens. And look, they're my Custom Hampton's Pendants! They've never looked so good. I must improve on my photo of them in the box. I must.

See all the pretties in Letitia's kitchen? You can purchase them through her gorgeous online store: 'The White Shed'. Letitia also has a bloggy, HERE, where there are more pictures of her beautiful kitchen.

I'm off to see Bill today. A large box full of artist's goodies has arrived for him. It's been a big week. I'm looking forward to sitting on Bill's bench and gazing at the river.

Happy Friday!

Could You Do Blue?

Look at this beautiful blue kitchen by Arent and Pyke.
It's such a perfect blue for a beach house.

It takes guts to do a coloured kitchen.
This is my my most favourite blue kitchen in the universe.
Big statement but true.

Look at those transoms!

Gorgeous.
Could you do blue?

The last weekend before we move house. I am getting up close and personal with cardboard boxes today. I need to go and buy the Saturday papers... as I have run out of packing paper for the last few things not ensconced in boxes yet.

Happy Saturday!

Dark And Stormy

Great first impression. Maximal impact. I mean really... it's not that much black... it just looks like it. It's all the stainless steel that creates the illusion of a 'dark and stormy' kitchen. They're actually grey walls and cabinets. I love how the white ceiling, lighting choices and rustic table and chairs soften the whole look.... and I love those bluestone pavers...super rustic.

I think I would have to lighten the walls... especially the one surrounding the window.....but that's just me and my fear of 'dark and stormy'. The stone benchtops are a great colour and would still look good with lighter walls. I'd still keep the grey cabinets. I'd just need that window wall lighter at least. What do you think? 'Dark and stormy' or 'lighter and brighter'?

Happy Thursday!
