A Keeper of the Hearth

A Keeper of the Hearth!
A Keeper of Hearts!

How I love these phrases and how I believe they  combine to hold dear all those things I cherish.
Home and Hearth a place for my soul to be at rest.
A place where I can feed the body and the more important aspects of those I love. My vocation can be summed up in this statement - 'A Keeper of the hearts around my Hearth'

In times past when every home had a wood fire and hearth for either cooking and/or warmth the family would gather in this place to replenish both body, heart and soul. Food for the body, warmth of family and friends.

All would gather around this place and be nurtured.

In so many homes today we don't have a hearth to gather around and yet still where do most people gather while visiting? Yes, in the kitchen!

I can't tell you how many times those who have come into our home have gathered in our kitchen. In this way I find it is easy to get to know one another better. In the everyday setting of preparing a meal or small snack it is easy to let our guard down and really get to the to share with others and this opens the way to get to the heart of our own hearts and perhaps even to bless others.

Of course in our home we have the blessing of a wood fired oven (our only cooking source) as well as other wood fires for warmth in Winter. I never tire of seeing how the warmth of a fire can draw people to one area of the home and thus induce interaction that may not have been happening before. So often we have one  or more people  backing up to the stove while we work in the kitchen o,r as we are in the family room to have a line of bodies trying to absorb this heat, even when not so cold.

It is the visible and tangible heat from a fire that draws people and I know (from previous homes) that  ducted heat through a  home, while warming does not produce the bonding that occurs through 'hearth love'

Therefore I truly see the way that the saying 'the heart of the home is in the kitchen' for once the 'hearth' was the kitchen and as a home maker, a wife and mother my most of my cherished moments happen in the 'heart and hearth of my home.

In fact I think of my role as a Keeper of the Hearth more of a guardian protecting those I love, by nurturing the whole person and this so often happens in the heart of my home- the hearth place!

In times past, the hearth–the fire–was often the figurative center of the home. It was used for cooking and the heat for ironing. In the evening, candles and lamps because of the cost were used very minimally and thus the fire from the hearth was used for lighting purposes as well as for warmth.
The hearth fire  heated as much of the home as possible form this one central location.

Without other  possibilities that we have in modern times made available by lighting from electric sources  families would usually gather together around the hearth–it was a place of warmth and a place for stories, everyday crafts that could be done together while sharing a common and entwined life together.

As I reflect on this thought I think it tragic in a way that due to the lack of the 'hearth place' that it reduces the opportunity for the' heart of the home' to be THE place where we may encourage and love one another, to strengthen and nurture each other in preparation for the life work we all are called to do!

Blessings to your homes,

Hearts For Home - Saying Goodbye

In today’s busy and aggressive society mothers at home are not given much encouragement to be committed   to their role in being home.

In my weekly 'Hearts for Home' post I am encouraging myself and others to commit to thinking about what 4-6 things we can do each week to bring our thoughts, prayers and actions to keeping our 'Hearts for Home'.

I am praying that a spirit of gentleness, generosity in thoughts and time along with loveliness and grace would lead us to be all that God wants us to be.

I pray also that each person involved in 'Hearts for Home' would also pray for any others involved as well.

May you be blessed by this initiative. I pray it brings you and your family many blessings.

So each week list 4-6 things you will commit to that will keep your "Hearts for Home'.
Please leave a you name and a link to your blog (if you don't have one just leave your list in the comment box)       and perhaps a comment so we can all see and encourage each other.

If you would like, add the 'Hearts for Home' logo to your side bar as a reminder of your goals.
May God Bless you this week.

I would also appreciate you linking back here too.☺ ♥ ♥

Saying Goodbye-
Good afternoon dear friends,
Yes this will be my last week for Hosting Hearts for Home!
For how long? I really don't know. Perhaps I will never return and then again perhaps I will.

At this season in my life I am finding that I just am not committing in my heart to the weekly meme.

Yes, my heart is still focused at home and I still hold dear all that I profess at the start of the post each week, but posting specifically  is becoming less focused in my thoughts and so I think it is time to move on.

I also have a feeling that I am supposed to do something different with this and so who know where that will lead. I believe God was calling me in Hearts For Home but now that calling is leading elsewhere.
Where, again I do not know but I am open to the possibilities.

The most regrettable loss over leaving this stage behind is the friends who have contributed and would still be interested in doing so. I will miss peeking into the hearts of your homes each week and for the love, acceptance and encouragement I have found there and yet I am convicted it is time.

I will leave the linky for this post open indefinitely for anyone who may feel they would like to contribute something over time and I will definitely  be wanting to keep up contact with my Hearts for Home sisters.

I would like to thank you so much for being a part of Hearts for Home over the last few years, I have been encouraged and blessed by all who have joined in and made some very dear and treasured friends.

May God continue to bless you in your vocations as home-makers committed to creating a Heart for your Home and all who dwell within.

Enjoying our lives in the New Year by doing ♥ ♥

Unlike so many bloggers out there I am still trying to get my heart and head around the goals and achievements I want for 2012. Mostly I have a few general idea but am trying to get my thoughts together soon.

As it is high Summer here I am trying to get the children to play games with water and outside for cooling and for the fun of too!!

We really are enjoying the holidays as we won't start lessons again until February when our boys start back to work.

I am thinking of lessons for next year though and contemplating our approach for this. Likewise I am thinking about how we do things differently with a mixed age family and how to achieve some of the 'essentials' that seem to be not as easy to do in this family mix and how to do them with the little ones again.

Just today I finished piecing Corbyn's top part of his quilt together and I really want to finish it before the cooler weather sets in. Not to mention I  am behind in this as I still have to make one for Trahaearn as well as our three younger girls, OUCH!

Seriously I really just want to get my head around my life and the way forward for us and how I respond to challenges and changes in my life - spiritually, emotionally, physically and practically.

May you all have a blessed week and thank you for being a part of Hearts for Home,

I am trying to be thankful for all the blessings that I have each day as well as to look for them in more difficult circumstances, as I seem to be affected more than usual by the tensions  and stress of others. I am contemplating the use of a Blessings book, but am worried I will not use it daily as I want and then feel pressured by not doing this.

Finish our Christmas shopping for gifts. I am so behind and have only started yesterday.

Bake our Christmas cookies together and to let the little children enjoy them by not trying to do too much at a time.

Prepare my heart this week for the joyous occasion of the birth of  Our Saviour on Christmas. Focus my thoughts on those I love and be willing to put myself out to  serve them in this special time.

I am reading  Lessons at Blackberry Inn: Adventures with the Gentle Art of Learning (again) and find myself refreshed and encouraged by the thoughts contained within. There is nothing like a good 'mother culture story' to help me strive to be all I would like to be in my vocation.

May I also say that I wish you and your families  a most blessed and joy filled Christmas this week, may you find the love of Christ to be overflowing in your celebrations and in your time together.

May you all have a blessed week and thank you for being a part of Hearts for Home,

I am contemplating how much we  need to keep up conversation with our older children and be close enough that they continue to share their thoughts with us. As our older children become more independent we need to remember they are not clones but  persons with their own thoughts, dreams and asperations and they need to  be encouraged in this and not told to 'be like us' and do only as we tell them to.

Well, as we have been preparing for two special guests these last weeks days we have not celebrated our two feasts days on the paticular days. So over the next two days we will be celebrating the feasts of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St Lucia.  It will be exciting to share them with these special guests.

Um, seriously I need to organise Christmas gifts for, well, everybody.

Keep my heart and mind open to any 'disturbances' within our children, as with the excitement building the younger children especially need to have planned days and allowances for ways to deal with all this abundant excitment and energy.

I am thankful o be sharing this life with my dear husband and wonderful children and I treasure this gift that has been given to me. Each day brings much joy and laughter as we share this journey together.

May you all have a blessed week and thank you for being a part of Hearts for Home,

As we come closer to Christmas I am encouraged each week by the readings we have  at Mass. I find that they cause me to reflect on where my own focus is and how I can be a better person.

The prayers and novenas we are participating in and the  'family bible reading challenge' we are doing also add to a sense of  purpose in my spiritual life

I am enjoying having our son Kynan home and am especially thankful for the fact he has helped with the  mowing of our 'mini jungle'.

I am still looking for some time to create some presents for our children for Christmas and so am looking for some quiet time that will allow for this.

The anticipation of St Nicholas Day from the little children has reaffirmed that even though the preparations for these special Feast Days and other family special days makes precious memories for them and the whole family. As I write the children have been working on a St Nicholas play for the last 5 hours to be presented tonight.

Being thankful for all the gifts God has given to me in regards to financial, family and of course in Himself. As we deal with issues both large and small.

May you all have a blessed week and thank you for being a part of Hearts for Home,

Well, we are starting our Advent season and the focus I want to have for this week is on reading many of our Advent and Christmas picture books.

I will also be making up those Christmas bags as I now have the  fabric for them. While I am at it I will make Trahaearn's St Nicolas stocking.

As we have put up our decorations I want to keep the house fairly clean and tidy, even with all those, crafty activities involved with Advent Unit Studies.

I plan to help Moran and Myffwyn with a day to themselves each of making Christmas presents for each other and all our family. Autumn did this with Corbyn and Arwen and they had the best day ever with her.

I need to plan for St Nicholas day next week and try and find some gifts that do not cost too much.

Try to keep up the new routine even though we are now entering this very busy time of year.

May you all have a blessed week and thank you for being a part of Hearts for Home,

Hello Dear Friends,

Even though I have completed my Bumper Edition of Advent an Christmas posts I still need to organise what we are doing as a family and what the children will study.

Stir Up Sunday is on this Sunday so we will be making our Christmas Pudding

Vellvin's Birthday celebration  was a non-event last week so we will have her birthday on Friday and Saxon's on Sunday

I just have not even looked at presents for our children either making or buying and also with some added guests to organise presents for too.

I will be looking to go to Spotlight (our major fabric and craft store) for some Christmas fabric for three Christmas bags for gifts and three heart shapes with names for the same people.

I am gradually adding to my book blog, the Christmas books  we have in our home.
I have added the board books and am working on the Activity/Craft books and Chapter books.

I am also considering making a Unit Study for our family and to share based on The Family and A Traditional Christmas.

May you all have a blessed week and thank you for being a part of Hearts for Home,

Hello Dear Friends,

Well I cannot believe it is so close to Advent now and am trying to plan for this this week so I am not running around madly nest week getting last minute things. One of these things will be to get my Advent posts into an organised way.

So we are planning Vellvin's Birthday celebration which we will have on Sunday as Kynan comes home from Uni for the year.

Because of this we will celebrate Christ The King on Saturday

I will be continuing to feed and express for our little Trahaearn as I am sure he is going well with this.

As Christmas is coming quickly I need to work out what I will make for presents and what is just over ambitious.

We have implemented some new routines and plans and are going well with these. We have added more responsibility for the younger children as I think in a larger family the older children are so competent that it is a bit of a trap in not getting younger ones to do the same jobs at an age when the older ones were.
Does that make sense?

I am also looking at some new Christmas books to buy and have a huge wish list on Book Depository that I will have to choose a couple from. I will also be adding them to my book blog, where I have a list of Advent and Christmas books (in complete as I need to add others we already own)
Advent and Christmas Book List 1
Advent and Christmas Book List 2
Advent and Christmas Book List 3

I will also be adding our Activity Advent and Christmas Book lists and the board books and chapter books so stay tuned for that.

I am also going to start hosting a Shared Posts meme on Thursdays as I spoke about last week where we can share any favourite or interesting posts we have been inspired by during the week. Hope to have you join in this also!

May you all have a blessed week and thank you for being a part of Hearts for Home,

Hello Dear Friends,

First of I am sorry not to have put the linky on properly last week or returning your visits. I am adjusting to this new routine of feeding, bottle feeding and expressing every 1 1/2 hours☺

Well after all that last week has gone by in a blur and I can not say we have achieved much at all. Though i guess we did achieve getting Autumn's resume ready, one feast day well actually two, a birthday and a celebration of a little friend's First Holy Communion.

Apart from that I think my focus has been just on getting through the day. I have found I am tired a lot and wonder if it is the medication I am on.

So for this week I will be trying to get the new routines I am trying to implement happening.

The other big event in our home will be the purchase of a long awaited book tomorrow: Inheritance. I think we are getting at least 3 copies as we will buy a family copy and Autumn and Vellvin will be buying their  own copy. I am pretty sure that Saxon and Eden will be getting a copy too fairly soon too.

Apart form this I think we will just be living and learning together as a family.

May you all have a blessed week and thank you for being a part of Hearts for Home,

Hello Dear Friends,

I am sorry to miss you all last week as you may know we have had trouble with our Trahaearn putting on weight.

Today we had success after a very disappointing couple of days where he lost weight again but today we have a significant increase of 190grams.

This is just to emphasise that fact that our baby is going to be my focus this week with feeding and expressing along with any Feast Day activities. and the extra medical and other unusual appointments for the week.

I will try to get that routine happening  that I talked about in one of my past Hearts for Home, boy it seems like that was so long ago.

We will be having Braedon's birthday on Saturday and a First Holy Communion celebration for a new little friend of the children on Sunday.

I am hoping to catch up on some blog posts...those dreaded drafts that call to me in the night.

And I just want to live and enjoy our family as it is now, even in  this imperfect life we are living.Life changes so fast and the family circle though changing and growing, which is a beautiful thing needs to be appreciated for the hear and now. I am so thankful for my Lord, my Faith and my family that I need to express this each and every day to all of them.

Blessings to you and your families,

Hello Dear Friends,

It seems we have been attacked by another bout of coughing and runny roses ( colds) again. So I will be back to tending our sick children and husband. This means lots of attention and cuddles, not a bad thing for any of us really.

We are still trying to implement routines again but finding this is being affected by the sickness in the house.

We managed to do some thorough Spring cleaning ( washing curtains, washing bedding including quilts, dust and polish, all the cobwebs and organising and cleaning of the rooms in general) on parts of the house last week. I ma hoping to continue this in the bedroom areas this week if we can.

We have a weekly menu this week as well as  some snacks planned and I am hoping this helps us this week especially.

Rely on Our Lord for the strength to achieve all this as well as the humbleness to serve those in need in my home. Really this is the first I need to do for those in my care.

I pray you all have much joy and peace in your hearts and homes this week,

Hello Dear Friends,

We are home again from holidays and will be re adjusting to home life.

I will be trying to get our children into routine again as we adjust our lesson routines, bedtimes and daily routines.

I am sure this will a huge undertaking as we found the time away, that the length of time out of familiar structure and 'home' was starting to take it's toll on all our children but especially our high needs children.

Trying some new recipes as we re work the meal planning for these coming weeks.

I can't believe it but I think I will start to look at preparing our Advent studies and plans for Christmas already. Where has  the year gone?

Well that will take up all my time and effort this week.

I pray you all have much joy and peace in your hearts and homes this week,

Hearts for Home - 4th October

Holiday Mode- 4th October

Hello Dear Friends,

We truly are in holiday mode here at the moment. We are enjoying the relaxed pace and visiting new and interesting places, visiting new friends we have made and spending a lot of time just 'hanging out'.

Like I said last week our home is our family and we are living this time being aware of how close a family circle we are and how much we enjoy each others company.

We will be making final preparations for Autumn's Deb Ball this week as it is on Saturday and she along with Braedon who is partnering his sweet Anna-Lisa (who is making her debut as well) so the excitement is very high for us all as we look forward to this special event. Please keep all the Debs and their partners in your prayers as well, that they have a beautiful and memorable night.

I am continuing to relax and am sure our precious Trahaearn is putting on more weight. This seems to really support the fact that I need not to be so busy but continue to put baby time ahead of all other interests.

Praying you all find peace and joy in your own homes this week,

Hello Dear Friends,

This week is a very unusual one for us as we away from home on a family holiday and staying with some very good friends.

Therefore my heart is not centered around our home as a physical space but the home we have created within in our family circle.

We are just going to enjoy this time away nourishing our hearts and souls in the presence of each other as we have been blessed with this holiday gift of being able to have this time together

However as we are completely out of routine I do need to keep my heart focused on our little ones especially as we enjoy this time, but allowing for the tired little ones who get very excited with all the new and exciting experiences

So I will be adjusting expectations of what we can expect form each other as we are experience this wonderful time together.

Praying you all find peace and joy in your own homes this week,

Hello Dear Friends,

All my and the family's focus will be on the holiday away we will be having incorporation with Autumn's Deb Ball so to facilitate this:

1. I am praying  for peace and tranquility in my heart as I go about my everyday tasks loving and serving the Lord in my vocation as wife and mother and home maker. This is especially important over the next few days as we plan and organise for our trip away.
Packing and last minute things often equals stress in our home!

2. Finish Autumn's Deb dress today  (hopefully), make our three little girls a special dress for the ball and myself a skirt too.

3. In any spare moments work on my Elf Slippers  as I find knitting quite relaxing and can pick it up and put it down at anytime.

4. Remain gentle and loving and calm  even when the day becomes very nerve racking with too many people trying to do too many things

5. Try to organise some interesting things to do while we are away and some activities for the car, audio stories, games to play etc. It has been years since we did any sort of long car trips, in fact our younger children have not been on a long journey at all.

6. Be thankful for  the opportunity I have each day to love and be loved by special people. This is something I do not want to take advantage of and need to cherish each and every day.

Please could you pray for safe travel for us and an enjoyable trip as it is the first holiday we have had together in over 9 years. Oh and we have a lot of coughs and flu in the house. Please pray for a quick healing in the midst of all else so we can enjoy this time together.

Praying you all find peace and joy in your own homes this week,

Hello Dear Friends,

1. I am praying  for peace and tranquility in my heart as i go about my everyday tasks loving and serving the Lord in my vocation as wife and mother and home maker

2. Enjoying time with our family complete with Kynan home. It is amazing that we just slip back into old habits and styles with him home.

3.I am really loving the easy and relatively quick work I am making on these Moonbeams and Applesauce: Rainbow Wool Elf Slipper Tutorial.
I can pick it up and put it down at anytime and loving the ease of knitting.

4. Plan all the items we need to pack for our trip for Autumn's Deb Ball and our 2 weeks away.

5.While one of my best de-clutterers is home I intend on getting this done. Finding time to do this is difficult and Kynan can work with others without me. Wish us well with this HUGE undertaking. Did I mention we have a pack rat in our home..aka  Stephen

6. I am making slow but good progress with  Autumn's, Deb Dress. I intend to have it finished this week.

Praying you all find peace and joy in your own homes this week,

Hello Dear Friends,

1. I have cut out Autumn's, Deb Dress  and now just need to spend some time sewing this week. I really want to have it completed by this time next week at the latest.

2. I am looking forward to our Kynan coming home on Saturday. He has been gone all term and we have all missed him so much. We love that he really loves coming home too.....a blessing I do not take for granted at all.

3. I have completed sewing up one of the gnomes and it is sooooo cute, the others are on my to do list for tomorrow and I am enjoying knitting these very easy socks
Moonbeams and Applesauce: Rainbow Wool Elf Slipper Tutorial

4. We are continuing to spend less time on DVDs and I am loving it. It allows much more time for creative and caring pursuits.

5. Work on the problem I am encountering with the younger children having raised voices and not listening to what they are told. I am struggling with the fact they seem to be more unkind to one another lately and certainly do not want this to continue.

6.  Commit each day as I start with asking for the Lords leading me in what is important for that day, and prompting me to do what is important rather than what I get distracted by. I sense we need some more time devoted to each other and life in the everyday not becoming stale but see the richness in the mundane.

Praying you all find peace and joy in your own homes this week,

Hello Dear Friends,

1. Work on getting the pattern cut out tonight for  Autumn's, Deb Dress and work on a sample bodice first.

2. Our little Arwen is talking in complete complex sentences as well as understanding difficult concepts. This is a little reminder for me on how quickly our babies grow up and how fleeting the time is. So I am endeavouring to nurture these precious time periods with the children.

3. Well last week I wanted to sew the TWO Gnomes I  knitted from my recent  Yarn Along's . I didn't actually sew them up but knitted another one to add to my collection of 'almost gnomes'. I want to start some knitted dishcloths as these are simple knitting that I can pick up to relieve me form the more complicated sewing I will be doing. And I will sew up those cute little gnomes

4. Continue to encourage out children to play outside in the beautiful almost  Spring days by going out side with them for lessons as well as crafting while watching them play.

5. To continue to say "YES" when asked to read picture books to our little ones, EVEN when I am doing other things. I have found that the younger children seem more contented when I do this and they are less inclined to ask for a DVD.

6. As I go about my home and with my loved ones I will continue to pray for all those who enter my thoughts from near and far, in fact this being mindful of God's promptings in my life has lead to a more gentle and peaceful heart I believe.

Praying you all find peace and joy in your own homes this week,
