Monday Nook

Today's nook is a beautiful stairwell I found via Chris Martin and Co builders.

The panelling is glorious. Would you call it wainscoting if it encompasses the ceiling too? Or does it become a coffered ceiling? Wainscoting historically did cover floor to ceiling, to insulate stone buildings ..... and it was only in the 18th century that wainscot panelling became a style of panelling applied to the lower part of a wall... below the dado rail and above the skirting board. I've heard that this lower wainscoting was not just decorative to start off with...  being used to cover the lower part of the walls in homes with poor damp proofing. Nowadays, it's purely decorative.

See why I am obsessed with this architectural style?! Obsessed, I tell you. Someone actually labelled my love of this New England, Hampton's, French inspired, architectural style as a 'fetish' (Wiki: 'the attribution of religious or mystical qualities to inanimate objects'). Yep, that just about describes it!

Happy Monday!
